PAPER
DOI:
Access: Yes
This manual provides some guidelines to good agricultural practices and the type of machinery
available in increasing production and productivity in wheat production in Kenya and Tanzania.
The targeted users of the manual are mainly medium and small-scale farmers engaged in wheat
production, using hand, draught animal and tractor-based mechanization. The manual consid-
ers sustainable and climate-smart mechanization options. Some of the machines described/
discussed are those under the Africa Agricentre of Excellence (AAE) project implemented by
Kibaigwa Flour Supplies in Tanzania and Tinga in Kenya in partnership with the AAE private sector
consortium comprised of Grimme, Poettinger and Bayer.

Farmers Training Manual on Mechanized Maize Production
DOI:
Access: Yes
Maize is a popular staple food in Kenya and Tanzania. It accounts for instance an average pro-
duction of 4.4 million tons for the period 2010 to 2013 in Kenya (FAO, 2015; Esilaba et, al. 2021)
and contributes to about 65% of daily per capita cereal consumption and serves as subsistence
and a commercial crop grown on an estimated 1.4 million hectares. Maize production accounts
for more than 20% of the total agricultural production and 25% of agricultural employment in the country (Esilaba et, al. 2021).

Zana za Uzalishaji wa Kanola Mwongozo wa Mafunzo kwa Wakulima na Wafanyakazi wa Ugani Afrika Mashariki
DOI:
Access: Yes

Mechanized Canola Production Training and Resource Manual for Farmers and Extension Workers in East Afric
DOI:
Access: Yes
Canola (Brassica napus) is a specific type of rapeseed plant associated with high-quality oil and
meal. Canola/Rapeseed was the third-leading source of vegetable oil in the world in 2000, after
soybean and palm oil. It is the world’s second-leading source of protein meal after soybean. Many
oil seed crops (for example sunflower, soybeans, rapeseed, sesame, ground nuts) are grown in
East Africa. But Canola is preferred in Kenya because it is very high yielding (1.5 – 4 tons/ha) with
an oil content of 42-46%. The co-product (meal) is high in protein (48%) and very useful in livestock
feed formulation. Canola oil can also be used for manufacturing biodiesel. As a rotation crop, it
has numerous benefits for the soil and the farmers. Canola can either be sold to processors or
growers who can set up light industries locally for processing the oil. The market for the oil is
readily available due to its high quality. Canola has huge potential as an income generator in the
region as an oil crop and livestock feed.
